Türkiye's PV installed capacity exceeded 20GW, and its wind power installed capacity exceeded 13GW

2025-02-21

Türkiye's photovoltaic power generation capacity exceeds 20GW, reaching 20.4GW, and its wind power capacity exceeds 13GW. The government plans to achieve a total capacity of 120GW for photovoltaic and wind power by 2035.

After exceeding the target of 19GW in 2025 in August last year, Türkiye's photovoltaic power generation has maintained a rapid growth. According to local media in Türkiye, as of February 16, Türkiye's solar power generation has reached 20.4GW, an increase of 39.3% over the same period last year.

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Türkiye said that photovoltaic facilities accounted for 17.5% of the total power generation capacity of 116.6GW, compared with 13.8% on February 16, 2024.

The cost of solar power generation is 50% lower than that of coal and natural gas power generation

The media also stated that the cost of solar power generation is 50% lower than that of coal and natural gas power generation. The government encourages the installation of battery energy storage projects in solar power generation projects and other renewable energy sources, and adds batteries to existing power plants. Two weeks ago, five projects won bids in an auction with a total photovoltaic capacity of 800 megawatts.

There are three applications for the pilot project of agricultural photovoltaic power stations. This concept is also known as agricultural solar complementarity or agricultural solar energy.

There are 75 solar panel manufacturers in Türkiye. The total production capacity is 44.5GW. The news agency reported that three of them produce solar cells with a total production capacity of 6.1 GW per year.

The government recently announced a goal to achieve a total installed capacity of 120GW for solar and wind energy by 2035.

Türkiye has more than 4360 wind turbines in operation

On February 13, there were about 280 wind farms in seven regions of Türkiye. According to the data of the Ministry and Türkiye Wind Energy Association, these wind farms have more than 4360 turbines with a total capacity of 13.04GW. Another report cited these data.

The proportion of wind power has reached 14%.

The country has 7 tower production plants, 4 blade production plants, and 4 generator and gearbox production plants. In addition, they also have hundreds of suppliers.

The total annual value of the wind power equipment manufacturing market is 2.2 billion US dollars. The latest data shows that with upcoming investments, the market potential will reach $10 billion.

At the end of last month, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources completed a 1.2GW wind energy auction before the solar energy auction. The national aid and bidding mechanism is called the Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), which is abbreviated as YEKA in Türkiye.

The International Energy Agency predicts that by 2027, the total power generation of renewable energy will account for 50% of Türkiye's power structure.
