Tunisia launches bidding for 200MW solar energy project

2025-02-15

Recently, the Tunisian Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy launched a tender to develop a 200 MW solar photovoltaic power project under a concession system, including two tender projects with a power generation capacity of 100 MW each, but the location has not been announced yet. Interested bidders can submit their applications before April 30, 2025.

In December 2024, the Tunisian government approved two power generation tenders under the concession system, aimed at procuring 1700 megawatts of renewable energy generation capacity. These projects are expected to be put into operation in 2027, with an annual power generation of approximately 1TWh.

In 2022, Tunisia passed a renewable energy law aimed at achieving 12% renewable energy in its electricity structure by 2020 and 35% by 2030. However, despite launching multiple rounds of auctions since 2017, the progress of the plan is far behind the initial plan, with renewable energy accounting for only 5% of the electricity structure in 2020 and 6% in 2023 (solar 4.9%, wind 1.5%, and less than 1% hydropower).
